Network Installation
Q. I'm the technician,
what's the no-nonsense technical network install procedure?
A. Install the local install
on the server. Install the network install on each client PC,
and use a UNC path to link the client to the
Server.
Description
Network installation is for when you have
installed Touch-type Read and Spell onto a central network server, and
wish to share it with multiple computers. It will install only the
necessary files onto each workstation to allow Touch-type Read and Spell
to run.
Installation
- Firstly run the installer as a
Single Workstation Installation on the server you wish to
run Touch-Type Read and Spell from. Please note that this will only
work if you have a Microsoft Windows Server.
- Once the installation on the server is
complete make sure that the folder you have installed Touch-Type
Read and Spell is shared on your network.
Important: The permissions on this folder need to be set
so that other users may read and write to it.
- On each workstation you wish to use
Touch-Type Read and Spell run the installer as before.
- Click next when you see the welcome
screen.

- Unselect Local and select Network,
then click next.

Troubleshooting/FAQ's
Please use this page to rectify any errors that
may have occurred during the installation of Touch-Type Read and Spell
on your systems.
The sound files came on a
single CD and I have set up TTRS as a network installation. How do I
share them with each workstation?
To share the sound files with all the computers on
your network you need to copy the files to a folder on your server.
This folder then needs to be shared across your network. Once this is
done, you then need to map this folder as a Network Drive. To do this
go to My Computer, click tools, and select Map Network Drive. Within
the dialog box that opens up, locate the folder on your server
containing the sound files, and click ok.
The folder should now be mapped and appear as a
network drive. Once this is the case, open up Touch-Type Read and
Spell, log in, and go into the options section. This can be found in
view > options. Click the "other" tab across the top of the options
window and locate the area called Speech Settings.
In the drop down menu select the newly mapped
network drive. You should now be able to hear the sound files through
Touch-Type Read and Spell.

I get this error message
when I try to run TTRS: "The following error has occurred 329: component
MCI32.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file
missing or invalid in module clssound: Initialise”
The reason that you have got this error is because
the workstation is unable to locate the file MCI32.OCX. The file is one
of many that Touch-Type Read and Spell uses to run.
The quickest way to fix this is to run the
Touch-Type Read and Spell installer, which will copy the file into the
relevant location on your computer.
If you are still having problems then confirm that
the file MCI32.OCX is located in the system folder of the workstation.
(For Windows XP this is usually c:\windows\system32 ) If the files are
not in there then you need to run the installer again. Alternatively
try a search on your computer to see if it has been accidentally placed
in the wrong location.
If the files are in the correct place then you can
try manually registering them by doing the following. Go to your start
menu and select run. In the dialog box that opens up type
regsvr32.exe "c:\windows\system32\MCI32.OCX". (Please change the
address in the speech marks to the relevant location for your system)
This should register the DLL with your system, allowing Touch-Type Read
and Spell to locate it.

When I go to
the history section of Touch-Type Read and Spell I get told that there
are no history records present for any of the levels I have completed
The reason none of the progress is
being saved is because the information is saved on the server. Please
check that the users of Touch-Type Read and Spell have write permission
to the folder where it is located on the server.

After installing TTRS on my server and client PCs,
I get an error when trying to start TTRS on the client PCs. This error
states that the shortcut is not linked to ‘TTRS.exe’. How can I resolve
this?
When you are installing TTRS on your client PCs
you are asked for the location on the network from where the client will
run TTRS. In the installation manual you are instructed to enter the
location of the TTRS folder on the server. On most networks this is
sufficient. However, on some networks it seems that you must link to the
.exe file.
This can be resolved very simply. When you get the
error message, Windows starts to browse for the .exe file (you will see
the ‘searching torch’ icon on screen). The .exe file will then be found
in the TTRS folder on the server. You will be asked if you want to fix
the shortcut so that it now points to the .exe file rather than to the
folder. Click ‘Fix’ here and the problem should be resolved.

My organisation has Global
Policies and Roaming Profiles implemented - when I install TTRS locally,
no histories are saved because the Global Profile disallows saving any
user files to the local drive (c:)
ANSWER You need to do a network installation, by
installing TTRS locally on your server, and then sharing its program
folder out, and getting your users to run it from the server's drive
location. Don't forget to also copy the contents of the sound CD to
another folder, and share that out too, as detailed in this FAQ entry:
"The sound files came on a single CD and I have set up TTRS
as a network installation. How do I share them with each workstation?"

I'm still having trouble
with the MSCHART.OCX or the MCI32.OCX file. Is there anything else you
can suggest?
Download and install the latest Visual Basic
Runtime files from Microsoft. Go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and in the search box at
the very top of the page, search "all downloads" for
"VB6.0-KB290887-X86.exe" (copy and paste, without the quotes). Install
the file once it's downloaded.
